Several times a year the lead story on the local news will be scenes of some hiker being airlifted out of a canyon by helicopter. Usually the person stranded was able to call 911 with a cell phone - which always makes me wonder "if he was within range of a cell tower, how lost could he really be?"
The news footage is always interesting, because on one hand you've got the humiliation of the guy inside the cage-like rescue basket, as he's slowly plucked from the unforgiving landscape. Then you've got a massive machine hovering above - overcompensating for the weakness of our species.
